Try This Instead of a New Year Resolution

Every year, the world tells us to make a New Year resolution. And every year, most of us watch those resolutions fall apart before the month is even over. Life gets busy. Motivation fades. The pressure to “fix everything at once” never really works.

So this year, we decided to try something different.

Instead of setting goals that feel like pressure, we focused on learning new skills and trying new hobbies. For Christmas, we chose gifts that matched our interests and opened the door to new ones.

Clay sculpting supplies so our children can start learning how to build figures with armatures and basic shaping techniques. Woodburning and carving kits that come with the tools they will need for beginner projects and simple designs. Sashiko (traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching) needlework and sewing materials so we can learn the running stitch and try visible mending or small decorative patterns.

We also bought sofa bed chairs for their lofts so they each have a comfortable reading nook. A little corner where they can curl up with a book, sketch, dream, or just take a break. It felt good to give gifts that weren’t just things but opportunities. A chance for our kids to discover new possibilities. And a chance for us to grow right alongside them.

Maybe that's what the new year should be about. Not pressure. Not perfection. Just learning something new. Something that makes everyday life a little more interesting.

If resolutions never stick for you, try a new hobby instead. It might fit your life better than you expect.

I’d love to know what you had planned as a resolution, a new hobby, or a new skill to learn in 2026? Feel free to share it below. Who knows you might just inspire another reader with a new interest.
